Home is in Lucan, where I live with Penny my wife - she is a psychotherapist and runs Therapy Haven in Leixlip - and Danny and April.

The year 2000 and moving to Ireland from the UK was a major change in my life, moving from a career working my way into more senior roles in various multinationals.

After 15 years of flying somewhere different in the world almost every week, when I moved to Ireland I did the International Executive MBA in Smurfit.

The many hats

  • Managing Director of Houghton Consulting. My main area is now AI - helping organisations of all sizes from The Defence Forces and Government Departments down to small businesses and charities understand and use it well.
  • Assistant Professor and Programme Director at UCD Smurfit Graduate School of Business. One of the world's top 100 business schools. I co-created and have run the two MSc programmes in Project Management since 2005.
  • Author. In recent years I have found that writing books is something I really enjoy, and I now have published books on AI, Accessibility and UDL, Risk and Project Management.
  • Senior Trainer with Trigraph Intelligent Learning. I do some project management and business communication training through Trigraph.
  • Chair of the Board at Shine. I have been involved in mental health since joining the Samaritans as a volunteer when I was 19.
  • Owner - Houghton Photography. My creative outlet is photography, and as with all my other pursuits, teaching this wonderful and accessible craft is where I find most satisfaction.
  • CPD - I am a lifelong learner. To stay fully up to date, alongside my other teaching and consulting, I am completing the Digital4Business Joint Professional Masters.

I now focus almost exclusively on online education, as this enables me to reach wider audiences and provide a high level of service to widely distributed groups.

Expert online educator. Covid proved to be a pivotal time for me as an educator, and helped me develop my skills as an online educator. Most of my work post-Covid is done online rather than in person.
